Fatal motorcycle crash kills one on Louisiana highway

One benefit of living in the south is the warm weather that is present most of the year. Due to clear road conditions and great weather, residents in Louisiana will often witness locals and tourists traveling by motorcycle. Although this is common, some drivers might not be aware that they are on the road. This is often due to their small size and ability to hide in blind spots. This makes it especially important for motorcyclists to avoid blind spots and for drivers to check their mirrors, blind spots and oncoming traffic before changing lanes or making a turn. Making a negligent maneuver could lead to a serious motorcycle accident.

A fatal motorcycle crash recently occurred in Houma, La., roughly 85 miles south of Baton Rouge. Authorities were dispatched to the fatal collision that involved an automobile and a motorcycle near the intersection of Louisiana Highway 182 and Savanne Road. According to preliminary reports, the accident happened around 3:00 p.m. when an automobile was traveling east of Louisiana Highway 182 and failed to yield to a motorcycle traveling west on the highway. When the driver of the car turned left onto Savanne Road, the oncoming motorcycle was not able to avoid colliding with the car and hit the side of it.

Due to the impact of the collision, the motorcyclist was ejected from his bike. The motorcyclist was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, but this did not prevent fatal injuries. Emergency crews pronounced the 31-year-old motorcyclist dead at the scene of the accident. The driver of the automobile was not injured in the crash.

The driver is cooperating with authorities and submitted to a breath test. Officers ruled out alcohol impairment being a factor in the crash due to the results of the breath test. The accident remains under investigation.

When a driver fails to yield to oncoming traffic, this could constitute negligence. A negligent driver could face serious criminal penalties and civil liabilities if they are found at fault for a fatal accident. In addition, the loved ones of the deceased could have a cause of action against the negligent driver. They could file a wrongful death claim in order to recover compensation to cover the resulting expenses and damages.

Following a fatal motorcycle accident, those involved and affected should understand their rights and options in the situation. If a driver was negligent and caused the crash, those injured or the loved ones of those killed in the accident should be aware that they might have legal options to recover compensation for their losses.
